Is it better to scroll or use the number keys?

I use numbers. I'm used to pressing 1,2,3 and 4. It's much quicker unless your a master at scrolling.

I program my first 4 number slots to over keys. I have c for 1, v for 3, r for 4 and g for 2. My slots are 1 sword, 2 bow, 3 fishing pole, 4 fns. The reason for this is most pvp servers auto spawn you items in those locations. I scroll to all over slots which are either food or extra fns.
O. That's a good idea.

I would argue that number keys are definitely better, they are harder to master imo as its pretty difficult to be pressing extra buttons while trying to strafe, but once you get used to it they are so worth it. A few reasons why:

-Firstly, number keys are always 'definite', as in, when I press 1 with my set up I always go to my sword. With scroll wheel, if I'm in my 4th slot and get surprise attacked, I need to remember how many to scroll before actually doing it and will pretty often start hitting with my fishing rod or something. Likewise in the middle of a battle, with a scroll wheel you always have to remember how far away you are from your sword etc.

-This one is a bit more opinionated, but I find that number keys press down far more quickly than scroll wheel, it might just be that my mouse isn't a gaming mouse but it is far more difficult for me to pull off quick fishing rod /FnS combos with scroll wheel because it takes me a bit longer to actually scroll 'correctly'.

- Number keys are far quicker to sort out if you're in the middle of a battle with multiple people (I hope that makes sense). I'm talking about something like fighting a team, if you kill one of them and they have a diamond sword / fishing rod which you could use, with number keys you can hover over the item in your inventory and press the correct hotkey, whereas most people that use scroll wheel manually swap them. Using the number keys is much quicker and easier to do. This is a less obvious than the other 2 as it's a bit more situational, but it's important too imo.

Just a few observations from someone who has used both, since I switched to number keys I have become so much better at mid-battle fishing rods and flint and steel.

It's easier to scroll for me. I set my hot bar up like this:1-sword 2-bow 9-fishing rod 8- FnS

I'd say number keys help you switch between items quicker and are easier to use; especially for trackpad users. So I'd have to say that number keys are overall better than scrolling for the item.

It depends, I use number pad for the first 4 slots, but the rest of them, I use the scroll on my mouse :p.

I have a magic mouse, so scrolling isn't even an option. It took a lot of practice to NOT move
my fingers so I don't accidentally scroll XD. Honestly, a gaming mouse is the best way to go -
but numbers certainly work well :p.

Since I have long fingers, I don't have any challenge using the first 7 keys, it sounds weird, but I developed a way to do it :p using scroll is also an option, but I usually use it for food :p
