The depth of death

Over the past year and a half, or even more, I've seen too many people proclaim that MCGamer, in some form or another, is dying or dead.

But, when you think about it, death can be vastly different from what you might think, if you're looking at it from another frame of mind.

Taking a cue from the example of death, let's break it down:
Religiously, there are many different "opinions". Some religions claim that after your physical death, you go to heaven. Others claim that you are reincarnated. There are some beliefs, or lack thereof, that say that once you die, you are simply gone.

The so-called "death" of MCGamer has been, and will continue to be, viewed from many points of view.
Often, those POVs vary depending on how deeply immersed the person is within MCGamer and it's community.

If someone is in an active, up-and-coming clan that has active members and regularly interacts with other clans, then that person will almost definitely believe subconsciously that MCGamer is alive and thriving.
On the other end of the spectrum, if the person is an ex-forumite that used to be very active within the forum community and now only glances at a few threads here and there, then it's quite likely that the person will feel as if MCGamer is dying, due to their own dying involvement in the community.

I'm going to purposefully leave this thread very open-ended in order to encourage discussion from anyone who reads it.

I'm curious to see who can raise the strongest points on this topic. ;)

*Right here, in my arms, away, from all harm. You'll be safe from all the flare, although I know you don't care.*

I believe the stated above has lead me to a slight though or two about MCSG has been dying, even though, in reality, it hasn't. (Or so I know.) Now, I know it's simply me who has decided to move on from this community for more IRL activities and other gaming passions.
Also, it can feel that way sometimes when a popular YT'er leaves the community. I remember back in the day when such an event happened when about 1-3 YT'ers left, (Huahwi, BajanCanadian anyone? Like hell raged forever..) and the community who either supported them or heard of the event thought that MCSG was going to die due to lack of publicity.
no. MCSG Was dying. now it is coming back to its glory from the past.
Is it now? I haven't seen it since 2013. But who says we can't learn from the past?

I think that MCGamer is now coming back, as if we were in a Dark Age of time, when we had to implement a lot of new systems and gamemodes to keep us alive, but not many were fond of it. But soon, I guess people started to accept change, and adapt for the better As I skim the forums now, it seems like the spirit is slowly coming back, re-emerging from the dark past, into a better future.

MCSG WAS in a dark age. the end of 2014 was awful for mcsg because almost all of mcsg left to go play CSGO. now people are coming back.
It's not coming back if people use "q" in their names smh
the people with q in their names aren't that much of a problem for me. and also, i don't have a q in my ign. just in my forum name. i also got it when q's in names were rare.

I know it was in a dark-age of sort, I just made the comparison to the history and the Dark Ages for a better comparison to what we were facing.

There's a difference between dying out and just changing. MCSG isn't the same server as it was in 2013 because we have different players, a different staff team, and even different gamemodes (all of which I miss so dearly, 2013 was truly a lot of nostalgic fun)

If you think about it, we really aren't dying. To be perfectly honest, we haven't grown much in the past year at all, however with the recent implementations of Solo SG and hopefully other community desired gamemodes soon we will gain a more populous and steady player base.

Was MCGamer ever dying? No. People may not have been in favor of the way it was going, but it was never dying. We have lost quite a few older and more "legendary" players, however they are replaced by new people to leave their legacies and move on.

All in all, MCGamer really can't die. We still have the best Survival Games out there and a staff team that surely is more favorable than most out there. I don't see why people have to see things from the negative side all the time around here.

I believe the forums are dying due to a lack of strong writing. As someone who doesn't lack the effort, the forums are nowhere near their fantastic status a year ago. There was a whole variety of people with different opinions whether they were funny or informative or rude. Now, there are only a select few members you can constantly find with something interesting to say while Mooclan is really the only one who can make a truly interesting thread.

Unfortunately I'm on mobile with a lot going on in the background, but this is what it comes down to. I can't speak for ingame, but the forum community is losing the experienced forumers. It's now filled with people who think a lot of posts increase your chances of getting mod.

I made a comment about this topic a while ago. I don't necessarily believe that MCGamer is on the road of mortality, but I believe it won't ever be as popular as it was in its prime.

We have to think about what MCGamer offers. Let's see....a very good survival games plugin and....that's about it. These servers were a massive success for a while due to the hype surrounding the movies being one of the main factors expanding our player base. However, once the movie series ends, there won't be many ways the average person could be introduced to this gamemode, based on a trilogy.

The reason why our competitor server, The Hive, experienced such massive growth compared to our puny growth is because they successfully branched out and created a multitude of enjoyable gametypes. A one-trick pony server like MCGamer has its limitations, and if someone doesn't find survival games desirable then there's no reason to play on here. Right now, there are 4804 players on The Hive and 1425 on MCGamer. Of course, there are a multitude of other servers but I used this one in particular for this explanation since it was, in a way, born from MCSG and they were quite similar at the time.

That's not to say that it's necessarily a bad thing (having one really good gamemode and nothing really else). If someone wants a premium survival games experienced in Minecraft, they know where to go. Minecraft servers all fill their own niches. The uber popular servers almost restrictively have multiple minigames, but there would be an imbalance if all the servers that catered to a certain, smaller audience were to suddenly disappear. We play an important role in the balancing of Minecraft servers. Hopefully with the new and upcoming additions, we can enhance the PvP experience this server delivers and cater to a larger player base than the one we have now.

Another glaring issue seems to be that there aren't any very popular YouTubers attracting people to MCGamer. I'm talking hundreds of thousands and millions of subscribers here. In a way, this community is relatively close-knit. If you were to ask a bunch of people how they found out about this server, they would most likely either tell you that they saw it on YouTube or they looked up Minecraft Hunger Games and found this. Nowadays, there aren't floods of new people arriving due to seeing the survival games broadcaster on someone's YouTube channel due to the fact that all of the YouTube channels that produce related content are all relatively small in the grand scheme of things.

In conclusion, I don't believe MCGamer is dying. However, we may be experiencing a very marginal decrease in new arrivals due to the lack of hype surrounding the hunger games. There's always the possibility that some sporadic event can drastically change the course of MCGamer's future. We'll have to wait and see.

I personally think it's a matter of change, but change for the worse. I am hopeful that 1.9 will make this game better again, but as of now PvP is in a bad state.

The sprint button made the game much less skill-based, as before it you had to worry about clicking and aiming as well as double-tapping every time you were hit and also every thirty blocks you ran your sprint stopped. Now you can just hold your sprint button and all there is to PvP is clicking and aiming. Because of the sprint button combos are much easier to land because your sprint doesn't stop and you can keep running at the person and the knockback you deal them basically means nothing as you can keep running at them and hitting them. Whoever gets a combo like that is basically set for that fight. So one swing can basically determine the whole fight because it leads to massive combos, and I don't think that really shows any skill. I think this is why fishing rod spam has become so big recently, because it's the only way to knock your opponent back from completely crushing you because their sprint doesn't stop. Back before the sprint button, getting a "strafe combo" took lots of skill (or the other person wasn't very experienced).

Now. I think the community has changed for the worse as well. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that just because lots of old players have left and now newer ones are coming in. I just think it's a lot more 'toxic' on the server. There's so much trash talk nowadays that some of the typical trash talking words are censored so you can't say them. That's how much of a problem it became. In general, I think that since the overall skill level of the average player on MCSG has risen, there is a lot more cockiness going around which causes this trash-talking problem (again, the skill level increasing is because the game itself doesn't take as much of it due to the sprint button).

There are a lot more of what people call "tryhards" and a lot more of small YouTubers trying to get big that all have the same bland commentary style that isn't very entertaining. I'm not trying to say all small YouTubers are like this, but some people are just good at commentating and some aren't. Everyone is good and bad at something in life. But the majority of small YouTubers I see don't have very original content and it's just not fun to watch. And about the tryhards, when I say someone is a "tryhard" it's referring that they are playing only to win and will do anything (boost, hack, etc.) and when they beat someone (fair or not) they will trash talk and will rage when they lose. There's a difference between being good and being a tryhard (but again, how difficult is it to be considered "good" because of how PvP is nowadays?)

At the end of the day, the community has changed and so has the game. There are lots of toxic players that trash talk and aren't very nice, but at the same time there are still quite a few nice people here (especially on these forums :)) I just feel like "Survival Games" isn't really Survival Games anymore. It should be called "PvP Games" seeing as maps nowadays are very small and usually have tons of chests (including lots of tier 2's) compared to how maps were back in the older days, where maps were bigger and finding chests was actually somewhat of a challenge, and tier 2's were actually harder chests to find. Now I see tier 2's in plain sight that are very easy to get on newer maps. This coupled with the whole sprint button thing really has changed this game. It just doesn't feel the same and I don't think it ever will.

This game is almost completely PvP based, except for the rarely-played old maps like SG1 and SG2 that pretty much every newer player despises (and let's face it, those will probably be removed and be replaced with smaller maps with tons of chests as well. They've already removed SG5, Survival Kingdom, and more). The fact that it is PvP based and PvP doesn't really feel like it takes that much skill anymore doesn't make me really want to play "Survival Games" that much anymore because I don't get any satisfaction from winning because I don't truly feel like I'm any better than my competition. I feel like I could go into a fight against somebody and win with 7 hearts one fight and then fight them again with the same gear and then they'll win with 8 hearts left. This is why I'm hoping 1.9 can at least do something to make this game take a bit more skill again (hopefully double-wielding or shields will help with that).

One last thing regarding the other gamemodes on MCSG (or MCGamer, whatever you want me to call it), I don't really find them to be that enjoyable. I understand they don't want to just have the same gamemodes as other servers but a lot of them just aren't much fun and plus no one even plays them. Survival Bingo is fun for a couple of rounds but it gets repetitive. Same with Deadly Descent and ZedChase. Survival Games isn't like that, as matches are different every time. Look at Hypixel's server. They have amazing well-coded original gametypes that are actually very fun to play. And they add new games all the time. I understand where MCSG was going with the whole "MCGamer" thing, but it just didn't really work out, but I don't think there's any going back at this point. I do think that if they can improve their gamemodes and maybe add some cool new ones it would work out, but as of now I just really would rather call this server "MCSG" and not "MCGamer."
