Hello Tributes,

Are you a trash talker? Do you like to boost your ego by shoving your victory in the face of those you’ve beaten? Do you love victory so much that you’re willing to put down others in order to relish in it? If so, prepare to see a lot more of this message in-game:

That’s right folks: the TrashTalk Filter is here!

The community has been arguing on both sides, with some standing against trashtalk while others argue against over-sensitivity. The staff as a whole have been hard at work planning how best to tackle the trashtalk issue without offending the opposing side. After opinions, plans, and perspectives were organized, we approached the Developers for their input, and they quietly released the filter we're announcing today.

We feel like the trash talk filter is the best compromise between punishing trashtalkers and letting them speak freely. Here is a system that avoids punishing for simple trashtalk phrases, and leaves no hurt feelings either.

Give me the TL;DR. What are the benefits of the Trashtalk Filter?
  1. Those who hate trashtalk will see less of it.
  2. Those who trashtalk lightly will not be punished if their message is filtered.
  3. Those who take their poor sportsmanship too far will get what’s coming to them.
How will the Trashtalk filter work?

The trash talk filter works similarly to how our swear filter works.
  1. As soon as a user types a message and hits Enter, the message is passed through the trashtalk filter.

  2. The filter checks the message for phrases that are deemed trashtalk.
    1. If no trashtalk is found, the server sends the message to the server and then to all other players.
  3. If a trashtalk phrase is detected in the message, the filter flags the message as trashtalk.
    1. The trashtalk message will be thrown out and thus not shown to other players.
    2. The player who sent the trashtalk message will be sent a reminder to be respectful of other players.
    3. And the message(s) sent by the player will be logged for moderation purposes, in case further action is necessary.
It’s completely automated and requires very little effort on behalf of the Moderation team. This simple system is expected to drastically cut the amount of trashtalk seen on our servers without being too severe, intrusive, or cumbersome.

What Is Considered to be Trashtalk by the Filter? What Phrases Are Being Filtered?

The Developers have compiled a list of what they consider to be the most commonly used trashtalk phrases. They’ve configured the filter to check for several permutations for each phrase, including upper/lower cases for letters (eZ = ez) and letters being replaced by numbers (r3kt = rekt).

Is “GG” Filtered?

No, “GG” is not filtered. In our eyes, the currently filtered terms cannot really be used in a manner where the term itself takes on a positive intention; there’s no way you would say, “eZ rekt, l2p” in a positive tone. “GG”, which has meant “Good Game” since longer than most of us have been playing games, still carries with it a positive connotation. As such, we have chosen not to lump it with the other straight-negative trashtalk phrases just because some snide people use the term improperly.

What Happens If Someone Trashtalk and Bypasses the Filter?

Just like if someone bypasses the swear filter, people who bypass the trashtalk filter will be punished for their poor sportsmanship. If someone bypasses the filter by altering a filtered phrase, such as stating, “e.Z”, then they may be reported to a Moderator via /report or Report Abuse, where they will be punished.

If a player trashtalks you without using a term on the filter, such as saying, “you all need to learn to play better” or “You are all terrible at PvP”, you can also report that player for Poor Sportsmanship. Poor Sportsmanship is considered less severe than Abuse, often insulting one’s ability to play the game instead of insulting someone personally, but it is considered punishable regardless.

Do note that the staff reserves the right to interpret the phrases it interprets, and thus makes the final judgement whether something is deemed Poor Sportsmanship, Abuse, something else, or not punishable.

Could we also have a Message Substitution System?

Our initial plans also suggested a trashtalk message substitution system, where a message that contained trash talk would be converted into a polite comment; "get good, nub" would be changed to, "well played! Good game".

However, after we approached the Developers for their input, it was clear that a message substitution system would be more complicated than our current system. It would take more time to create and incorporate that substitution system into our current system than it took to make the filter in the first place. The idea itself has been since added to the list, but for now we will have to enjoy the trashtalk filter as it is.

So Trashtalk is Punishable now?

In a sense, Yes and No. It’s important to distinguish between light trash talk and hardcore trash talk. No, we won’t punish light trashtalk, but we gladly punish hardcore trashtalk.

Light trashtalk is the occasional usage of the terms such as, “Rekt” and “EzPz”. We accept that those phrases are quite common, and to be honest some players may accidentally let one slip after getting caught up in the excitement of a game; one mild-mannered player came posted on the forums how he was surprised by his own actions when he trashtalked, and often apologized for it. It’s because they’re so common and seemingly harmless that we instead choose to filter them rather than punish for them. It lets people say what they want without having it insult others.

Hardcore trashtalk is basically trashtalk taken too far, where it’s no longer innocent or occasional. This is where people avoid the filter or say more severe things with the expressed intention of insulting others. This sort of attitude is poor sportsmanship that cannot be excused, and thus we will punish people who insist on crossing that line.

Users who bypass the trashtalk filter to continue to force their bragging down other players' throats will be punished for Bypassing Filter. Remember: it's better to be filtered than it is to be punished.

MCSG is an inherently competitive gamemode, and we have some passionately competitive players. But being competitive is no excuse to be a jerk to other players. Ruining other peoples’ experiences in order to elevate your own creates a toxic environment, and that is something we should not allow on our network.

And because of that, MCGamer stands in favor of good sportsmanship by punishing those who would demonstrate otherwise.

“GG”, which has meant “Good Game” since longer than most of us have been playing games, still carries with it a positive connotation.
especially when a two team of hackers ten heart you and say it ^_^

(chosen to ignore people who use it like that, as most of the time, they're ignorant anyway)

I see where you guys are coming from though, and quite frankly, I along with most of the community are glad. Thanks for listening to what majority of the people wanted.

*claps* I'm glad that this was incorporated into MCSG, I believe trashtalkers get away with too much in games, and a message substitution system may be a nice feature to have, but having a friend who does plugins for servers, say that even that can be very difficult, since there is so many different phrases.
