ARMOR:
There is a common misconception that gold armor is worse than chain all around. This is not true, gold and chain provide the same amount of armor points; EXCEPT for chain pants which do infact add one more armor point than gold, otherwise they are identical.
SWORDS:
It is important to know how dangerous your opponent is as well as your own capabilities. In order from weakest to strongest - Wood / Gold, Stone, Iron, Diamond, Sharpness I Iron
And of course axes are weaker in their respective categories but still better than the next lowest tier, for example a stone axe is stronger that a wooden sword.

BOWS:
Bows can be extremely useful, but not everyone is the best with them. Its really up to you whether you are comfortable with using one, but just remember that a fully charged bow shot does as much damage as a diamond sword does.
MISC:
Flint and Steel can be somewhat useful to stop someone chasing you, but it can be very hard to do and usually will not earn you an upper hand in combat.
Boats are extremely useful if you need to craft a sword but don't have a stick. Just place it in water and crash it into any objects.
Fishing Rods do not do any damage but are quite annoying and can be used to escape from someone.
FOOD:
Raw food can be cooked in a furnace using spare wooden weapons or saplings, but don't waste sticks on cooking things. In addition it is important to know what hunger saturation is, when you eat and item that fills more that your entire food bar it adds to what is known as saturation. The higher your hunger saturation is the longer it takes for your saturation to deplete. Food items such as mushroom stew, pumpkin pie, and cooked meats saturate the most.

COMBAT:
You always want the low ground in a fight, especially in water battles. This is because you have slightly longer reach upwards than you do downwards. So if you are below someone you can hit them when they can't hit you.
Don't run and jump at someone you intend to fight. This gives them a chance to hit you in air knocking you back and disorienting you.
When fighting someone it is import to always aim at the chest and strafe around them. This will disorient them as they try to attack you.
TEAMS:
Taking down teams can be very hard, nearly impossible. But the best method is to separate them, taking them on one by one. This can be difficult but is best accomplished by using something such as a bottleneck or by knocking them off of tall ledges to their deaths or into lava with something like a bow.
MOVEMENT:
Jump while sprinting, it will make you travel faster. And if you are in a two block tall gap spam the space bar, you will travel very fast. If you are in water, sink down to the bottom and sprint off the bottom, you will go slightly faster.

If there is anything I should add make a comment and I'll try to add it.
