How to be Happy

Globally, more than 350 million people of all ages suffer from depression. That is about 4.9% of the world’s population. I would assume that most people would wonder how to become happy again, how to overcome depressive thoughts. It takes a while, and it takes work. You have to want to be happy, it doesn’t come on it’s own sadly. I know, it’s easier said than done. I myself have been experiencing depression for nearly four years now, but I’ve gotten a lot better. I am not longer the pessimistic, negative Pyrrhic. I am now optimistic, positive, and overall happy.
I think in order to be happy you have to experience things; exciting things; dull things; emotions at both extremes of positive and negative. I think on some days you need to drink five cups of coffee and feel your heart all but explode in your chest, and on others you need to stay in bed, staring at the ceiling and humming songs that you can’t remember the names of. You have to climb a mountain so high that your ears ring, that every breath is a gasp for fresh air. You have to swim so deep that you feel the weight of water crushing your lungs. And through it all you’ll learn to cherish oxygen like you never did before. The key to happiness is appreciating the small things and not comparing yourself to others. The more you experience, the more you’ll realise how important it is to keep the tiny victories close to your heart, and the big wins in perspective. Experience will teach you invaluable lessons, especially when it pushes you to your limits. Don’t envy others; live your own life. And if you want to achieve happiness, no matter what, keep living it.
And I've come to notice that people spend so much time putting on armour against the world that they forget how much damage they can do to themselves; and they lose hope, and want to give up. But anyone can give up, it's the easiest thing in the world to do. But to hold it together when everyone would understand if you fell apart, that is true strength. To not give up, you just do it. You force yourself to get up. You force yourself to put one foot in front of the other, and you refuse to let stuff get to you. You fight. You cry. You curse. Then go about the business of living. You set a goal for yourself, and work towards that goal, protect it. If people can't do something themselves, they'll tell you you can't do it.
So here’s what I’ll say: maybe your life really sucks right now. Maybe you’re in a hole so deep you’ll need a miracle to climb back up. But if you make it out of this, you’ll be stronger, and you’ll have experience. You’ll be able to look back and say, ‘I can’t believe I made it.’ You’re alive because the fire inside of you burns brighter than the fire around you. If life can kill your hopes and dreams, it can also make them a reality, you just have to work hard and consistently. There are always opportunities; there are always new chances. Do whatever it takes to feel real again. Work towards the day when you can put this behind you. There is always hope. Listen to me, okay? Hope is being able to see light despite all of the darkness. There. Is. Always. Hope.

I don't like that a person who deserves happiness is depressed. You deserve happiness.
Never lose sight of that.

Here are some quotes that I've found to help me when I am feeling distressed :

Stay strong, it will get better. I know it’s stormy now, but it can’t rain forever.
Be the difference you want to see in the world.
Drive needs no push, passion needs no pull, motivation only needs you.
Don’t trust the things your heart tells you when it’s sad.
Don’t be a jerk, be kind to people. Give more than you take, and do it despite the fact that you only really like 7 people out of 500.
It’s okay to be a glowstick; sometimes we need to break before we shine.
It’s okay to live a life others don’t understand.
It’s okay to still be learning to love the parts of you that no one claps for.

Always be kinder than you feel.
As you get older things will seem more lame than before, nothing will change but you I promise.
Don’t base permanent decisions off of temporary emotions.
Everything works out. Even if it doesn’t feel okay for a long time, or even if it feels like things will never be okay again. Everything works out in the end.
I swear to god it will be okay, not today but one day.

This is very well written. Thank you, _Pyrrhic!

Depression is extremely serious and should not be taken lightly. Having been through depression in the past, and a bit as of recently, I know what it feels like and I do not wish it upon anyone.

Most of those who experience depression have it because they are lonely and they have no one to talk to. So the next time you notice someone who is lonely, just go up to them and talk to them. It will make all the difference in the world to them.

I generally look for cute boys when I am sad to make me happy. It works most of the time too! :']

Just remember to not do anything irrational or
illogical. You have a full life ahead of you. Although you may feel unwanted or unloved, others may not feel the same way about you in return. I want and love you; I want nothing more to see you happy and to see you succeed! <3
