The Touhou Project is a series of hell-bullet (danmaku) game from Japan. It is developed by a one-mean team "Team Shanghai Alice" which only consists of one member- ZUN.
Basically, you know those Starship games where you're in control of a starship and you have to dodge rockets (and stuff) and at the same time, attempt to destroy enemy ships? Touhou is like that, except that it's 10x harder. So far, there are 14 official Touhou Project games and 7 spin-offs.

Early Era
A mysterious mansion has appeared. Reimu and Marisa goes to investigate and finds out that the mistress of the mansion, Remilia Scarlet, is a vampire who came from the Outside World to the Gensokyo through unknown means. With her, she also brought the residents of her mansion. The Gatekeeper, Hong Meiling. The Librarian and High Magician, Patchouli Knowledge (and her assistant, Koakuma). The Head Maid, Sakuya Izayoi and her psychotic sister, Flandre Scarlet.
Winter has been plaguing Gensokyo for months. It seems that Spring will never come. Reimu and Marisa finds out that the Spring is being stolen away from a source from the World of the Dead. Sakuya Izayoi is tasked by Remilia Scarlet to assist the duo. The trio finds out that the Spring is being channeled by the "Saigyouji Akashi", which is an enormous Cherry Blossom tree. Who was the culprit? The culprit is the Mistress of the Netherworld and the Head of the Saigyouji family, Yuyuko Saigyouji with her gardener and faithful guardian, Youmu Konpaku. But wait! There is someone lurking where you are unable to see, pulling the strings with Yuyuko! Its none other than the manipulator of borders herself.
The Full Moon festival is here! Everyone gathers are the Hakurei shrine to celebrate this festival! Wait a second, it seems that the moon in the sky isn't the real moon. But why? 8 of our cast volunteers to investigate, they are split into 4 teams; "Border Team" Reimu Hakurei & Yukari Yakumo (manipulator of boundaries), "Magic Team" Marisa Kirisame & Alice Margatroid (the magician puppeteer), "Scarlet Team" Remilia Scarlet & Sakuya Izayoi, "Netherworld Team" Youmu Konpaku & Yuyuko Saigyouji. You can choose one team to play the course of this game. Whichever team you pick, they will find out that the moon has been changed by Eirin Yagokoro, why did she do that? She did that to protect her mistress, Kaguya Hourasain, whom is a Lunarian. She escaped the Moon to escape the war between Lunarians caused by the landing of the Apollo from Earth.
However, to get to her, the protagonists needs to get pass the Lunar Bunny, Reisen Udongein Inaba. Her ability is nothing to be trifled with since she has the ability to completely manipulate one's sanity and insanity.
Spring is here! Sakura flowers are blooming around Gensokyo and its of an outstanding beauty. On the journey on viewing cherry blossoms, the protagonist meets Aya Shameimaru, whom is a reporter and journalist taking pictures of the flowers. The protagonist will also meet Medicine Melancholy, whom has the evil intent to poison the flowers. Komachi Onozuka, the guide of lost souls, appears and challenges the player. Upon defeating her, the protagonist will meet Shikieiki Yamaxanadu, who works as the judge of souls; deciding whether they will go to Hell or Heaven.
A person comes to the Hakurei shrine and says that the shrine should close for good. Reimu and Marisa goes to Youkai mountain to investigate and there, they meet 3 Goddesses at the Moriya Shrine. Sanae Kochiya, Kanako Yasaka and Suwako Moriya, and a Kappa called Nitori Kawashiro whom is troubled by the presence of these new Goddesses.
An earthquake is detected and expected to hit Gensokyo. Sanae and Meiling goes to investigate and it seems that a keystone has been removed causing unstable geological phenomenons to occur under the surface. The culprit to this incident is Tenshi Himanawi, whom is a Celestial (a human who ascended to Heaven). Her reason for doing this is because she was bored of the life in Heaven and came down to Gensokyo to have some fun. She later realised what she did and put back the keystone.

The series takes place on a fictional land called "Gensokyo". Its technically located in Japan; technically because its not REALLY located in Japan, just that to get into Gensokyo, you have to be in Japan. Take it like the Portal games. You have a Portal leading to another room. Does that necessarily mean the other room is in the room you are currently in?
Gensokyo is a place where humans and youkais live in peace. Its a place of outstanding beauty (and chaos!).

Reimu Hakurei
Reimu is a shrine maiden tasked to look over the "Hakurei Border" of Gensokyo. Which is a border that prevents any means of physical contact from the Outside World. This task has been done by generations and generations of the Hakurei clan. She resides at the "Hakurei Shrine", which is located near the border.
Marisa Kirisame
Marisa is a Witch whom Reimu made friends of in the first game. She is someone that one can call to be an "Ordinary Magician", since she has no special ability apart from magic. However, she has a signature weapon called the Spark. Its a device that allows Marisa to channel Magic into and literally create a huge wave/laser of magic. If you've played League of Legends, Marisa is like Lux. Truth be told, Lux's design was inspired by Marisa, this is due to Lux's designer being a huge fan of Touhou. Her ultimate skill, Final Spark, is also something Marisa has of the same name.

Aya needs some outstanding pictures for her newspaper! Take some pictures of amazing sights of bullets, while at the same time dodging them.
