So since alot of people may not now everything about how the hunger works i thought i would make a small little post on some of the basics.
http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Food
That link is for the wiki where you can see what food gives you how many hunger points, but for un-cooked food, fish gives 1, raw beef and porkchop gives 1.5 and chicken 1 with the chance of being poisoned.
For cooked food/craftable food, cooked fish and bread gives 2.5, cooked chicken gives 3 and steak and cooked porkchop gives 4. Bowl of soup also gives 4, melon and cake gives 1(cake gives 6 in total, but 1 each use). Apple and golden apple both give 2.
Saturation. This is the key with hunger. Saturation is how long it takes before your hunger bar starts dropping. you can see by the link what gives what, but the basics is that steak and cooked porkchop is on top, followed by bowl of soup and golden apple, then comes cooked chiken, before bread and cooked fish. For the low tier food there is some guidelines to follow. Never eat a cookie if you're not gonna eat something else right after as cookies have the lowest saturation of all food at 0.2 which makes your hunger drop crazy fast. Raw fish is just a little bit better than cookie with 1.2(Steak has 12 saturation, 10 times as much as raw fish), then raw porkchop and raw beef has 1.8 and cake says it has 2.4, but it's 0,4 for each use so if you can't eat it all it ain't really worth it.
So the tip is, let say you're on 5 hunger(half) and you have a raw fish and a steak, eat the fish first as it gives 1 hunger and low saturation, then you eat the steak as it gives you alot of saturation and you won't loose hunger as fast as you would if you ate steak first then fish as the saturation goes after what you last ate.
One last tip, you can eat spare golden apples to boost saturation almost to infinity and the thing is that you can keep this for the next game, so if you win and have spare golden apples, eat as many as possible and if you join the same server it will take much longer for your hunger bar to drop than usual.
Hope this helped
