True because slices only give one heart it, would help

I just end up tossing the cake back and forth with my ally, just to irritate them. So, maybe not remove them, so I can keep doing this?
Also,
I am going to vent for a moment. I HATE COOKIES! They only give you half a heart and take up space in your inventory - yet you don't want to leave them behind for someone else.

Cookies are good because they are easy to make, but they need to add cocoa beans.
Cake IS a half block, but you can't stack them on top of each other. The wiki says that on SMP servers cake can be used an unlimited amount of times. This may be why you can't place them down. The watermelon problem is an easy fix. Just make it craftable to 8 slices.
