I was a big fan of Civilization 4, but I personally could NOT get into Civ 5. The city states, the new ways of buying land, searching for landmarks, and much else really just seemed to be gimmicks that detracted from the core gameplay. So, I personally did to like the game, but I know many others did, so....meh.
