Mojang's new rule against profit from Minecraft- Is it fair?

Not to mention that Mojang's gross profit after expenses last year was over $123,000,000 (yes, $123 million) USD... they're far from financial problems.

As of December 13, 2013, nearly every public Minecraft server in existence breaks the EULA. Although the EULA has been in place since late 2013, Mojang is just now looking to start enforcing it as of recent. As others have said, you're forced to accept the EULA to run a 1.7.10 server.

So what does this mean for us and 1.8 support? It could mean a few things:
  1. Mojang works out the issue with larger servers and refines their EULA to be fair to both sides, so we can legitimately update to 1.8.
  2. We stay on the temporary solution that we usually use on new Minecraft updates, which is to use a 1.7.9 server (before 1.7.10, so it doesn't force EULA acceptance) that supports 1.8 clients.
  3. We continue breaking the EULA as we (and every other server) are already doing and update to 1.8, hoping that Mojang doesn't actually enforce it.
Either way, MCGamer isn't going down without a fight. We're already doing what we can to fight this "new" EULA and possibly gain an exemption for ourselves. Leave worrying about what happens to MCGamer to us, and just enjoy the game :)

Damn.... And that equates to how much annual salary for a Mojangsta..? Crazy.

I just don't want MCGamer as a whole to get taken down legally, it seems a bit extreme for an 8 bit game to spend thousands if not millions of dollars on a community who is just trying to have fun. Just me? k.

Thats all well and good but think how this would effect smaller servers if this was the case. Yes bigger servers could make deals with mojang but would the small servers be able to. After all all servers start of small, so if this was the case there would probably be no more new server and all the small ones would have to close. so hopefully this doesn't happen and mojang come up with a way to make everyone happy.

I dont believe 3 is the best solution as soon will someone contact MC support that he has spent a lot of money at MCG etc. 2. is a really good idea, haven't really tought about it. Grum however said that they will try to find a legal way for earning money, but its interesting how will this turn out.

Ava , if MC doesn't rewrite the protocol for 1.8 it shouldn't be so hard to let newer clients play on 1.7.9 version if I am right?

With any of those solutions, we're still technically breaking the EULA; the difference is that 1.7.9 and earlier assume your acceptance, while 1.7.10 and later require your acceptance.

I said it a thousand times and Ill say it again.
People are paniking out of nothing.... we dont know enough yet to judge what they are doing.
Some of Mojang's biggest income comes from servers rather than single player. Just think how many people have bought countless alternative accounts just for MCSG? The people at mojang arent stupid... they wont get rid of what brings them the most ammount of Minecraft account purchases.

I mean, it would be good if they just took out the abusive ones, that give you an advantage of some sort, like OP kits *ahem* Mineplex *ahem*, and just leave non abusive servers like MCSG alone.

HOLD IT

You've all misunderstood, please look at the following video for the rules:

You CAN donate, you CANNOT be rewarded for it. No Pay to win, no "VIP" ect

I'm quite disappointed to see even staff on the website here complaining about Mojang without doing any research on the exact legal lines in the new rules. Please before you all get pissy over something make sure it's legit.

They know you can still donate... but the incentive for donating goes way down once you remove perks. Donations run the servers and people most likely wont donate all that much if they aren't rewarded. Also, I'm sure the staff know a lot more than some youtuber about legality and servers considering they own hundreds.

If this is introduced it will just kill Minecraft, I know for one I sure won't be playing very much anymore if this happens.

EDIT: Just in case people are unsure, the new EULA has not been officially pushed yet, but at the moment it is just rumours.
i hate single player, so i wont be playing much either
anyway, battlefield 3 and 4 are my backup games lol

Implying I didn't read them myself, I put the video up there for people to understand everything clearly, the youtubers themselves simply read off the rules in a easy to understand way for the *ahem* lessers of the website here.

In my opinion the change is quite nice. They said "Everyone needs to donate to play and gets perks, or no one does" although it sounds quite socialist, it's the kind that works out well. It removes dumb servers where only the guy with the big wallet gets to have fun. IE: RPG servers.
If the implemented this in Gmod servers I wouldn't complain at all.
