I think the charge was a waste of potential. Why not give server owners the option to...
-make it knockback-based?
-maybe slower hits would create a smaller window of time for the other player to strike back?
-maybe it increases the range, making strafing extra complicated?

If we had the choice to change the variable or remove it entirely, I think a lot more people would be satisfied. Options are what makes Minecraft GOOD; give us the tools to make unique styles of combat, and it'll happen. Standardizing things is the last think Mojang should do with a sandbox game.
