Question about maps

In some of the adventure maps I've seen them play on the Yogscast, the map creators used maps (the item) to write notes that the player could pick up and read. Does anyone know how this can be done?

I wouldn't think you would be able to do that. It doesn't make too much sense to me.

It might have been some special server, it definitely wasn't this one.

It wasn't a map here. It was an adventure map made by someone else that they were playing. Here's a sceenshot:

The Voxel Box created the example your using. They also have a video tutorial up on their youtube channel.

However The Voxel Box used a Bukkit pluggin called BananaMapLoader, this will require a multiplayer server with the plugin running (I also think the plugin is out of date). So instead you could use a singleplayer mod called ImageToMap. I have no experience with either of the programs so this is all the help I can give you, Sorry.​

Edit: I didn't really make this clear, you will only need the plugin/mod to generate the maps. Others playing the save will not need the mod nor plugin to read them.
