Fishing rods do damage if they don't have armor on, so it's good for kiting people around in early game.
Also, it freaks some people out that they're being hit and may deter them from chasing you.

Also, I'd actually say avoid the town unless you're in a group or got an early sword as that's where most people go since there is a high concentration of chests (if you know where to look).

And why did you give away the mushroom secret now nobody will die from starvation...
