If you sit in it you should be safe, but its hard to do.

Oh and if somebody is going to avoid the boat use a fishing rod to hit them in. (Only works in close calls though.)

Well they can destroy the boats with fishing rods, arrows and swords so they can still clear a path no matter how many boats a person stashes.

This is an interesting strategy but it is impractical because how are you supposed to get so many boats.
