*I wrote this thread last night without an internet connection, then copied it over to the website and formatted it. There might be an issue that I didn't notice.*

Hey,
So it's been a while since I wrote a thread, and it's been bugging me for quite some time... I've started to forget how to write a thread!

(I'M NOT DEAD, JUST HAVING REALLY BAD WRITER'S BLOCK.)

Whether you want MCGamer to update to 1.8 or not, it's going to happen.
It would go against the flow of progression to stagnate on 1.7.
So, we may as well accept and get used to it rather than causing riots over a video game.

The Network is limited by the Minecraft version - the maps are missing out on many new blocks, the gamemodes could be vastly changed and added onto, and many minor improvements could be implemented.

MCGamer has been sitting on 1.7 for something like 15 months. Over a year. Within that period of time, they've also included support for 1.6 and 1.8 accordingly, but 1.7 is currently the basis for the server, and has been for quite some time. There are almost no 1.8 features on the MCGamer network, compared to what there could be.

- Ocean Monuments. This includes the mobs (Guardians), fabulous blocks (Prismarine), and themes.
- Barriers!
- Diorite, granite, and other new blocks. This includes new doors and fences, as well as the previously mentioned ocean-themed blocks.
- Armor Stands
- Spectator Mode
- Rabbits!
- Bouncy Slime Blocks
- Improved Scoreboards

And so much more!

With the Ocean Monuments comes along several new aspects. First of all, it makes underwater-gameplay a reality! On MCGamer, that could relate to an underwater-themed map. (It reminds me of SG Atlantis.) And there are several other possibilities!

There is also, of course, the new blocks themselves, which allow for map-makers to expand their horizons even further than 32 chunks. Survival Games, SGC, QQ, ZedChase, and many of the other gamemodes will have opportunities to be visually upgraded.

Barriers are a feature that has been long-awaited, and many people had hoped that MCGamer would implement them into their gamemodes a long time ago. But due to the fact that they had to maintain 1.7 support, they were never implemented... until, perhaps, January 29th!
These will allow for the glass dome to be removed.
There is some speculation that the glass domes cause lag. As they are removed, players may experience increases in FPS, particularly for lower-performance computers, as they will not have to render the glass domes when they are near the edge of the map.

Spectator Mode is probably the feature that can affect MCGamer the most (Especially the Hunger Games-based gamemodes).
With a completely revamped and vanilla method, 1.8 introduces the spectating mode. This could allow for a lighter plugin, meaning faster servers with less lag.

As far as I've heard, people are reluctant to upgrade to 1.8 for only a few reasons.

- Worse FPS
Not always true!
I have tested this out. With and without Shaders, OptiFine, as well as Shaders AND OptiFine.
On a $500 basic PC (https://pcpartpicker.com/user/Mooclan/saved/nTcBD3), I noticed no worsening in FPS. In fact, on Valleyside and Holiday Resort, I saw an FPS increase of roughly 25-75 with SEUS Standard V10 Shaders. With Shaders disabled, the increase grew even larger.
Perhaps it's just my computer, or maybe I was just lucky. But 1.8, with the right settings, does not significantly lessen FPS. There is also optionally 1.8.1, which OptiFine is compatible with.

- Skins malfunctioning.
Okay, this one is just absurd. New skin settings, new possibilities. It's not really that difficult to update your skin.

- Mods not updated.
On MCGamer, there are three main mods that are allowed (to my immediate knowledge - I'm writing this without an Internet connection, so I can't double-check.)
OptiFine - Updated to 1.8 and 1.8.1
Shaders Mod - Updated to 1.8 (And compatible with 1.8 Optifine Ultra B6)
Directional HUB/HUD/GUI - (I'm not sure what it's called) I'm pretty sure this one was updated a while ago, too.
TooManyItems is also allowed, but has no gameplay-impact.
If you're trying to use another mod on MCGamer, you might be breaking a rule anyways...

Something that people sometimes overlook is that many hack clients take a long time to be updated, and some of them are not 1.8 compatible yet. (Thanks, OhFancy, for reminding me about this earlier today)
Hack clients are essentially clients with mods that allow for game-changing/game-breaking abilities. These can sometimes take a long time to update, especially if there are a large number of features offered within the hack clients.

More features -> More popular hack clients -> Majority of hackers use them
~~
More features -> More things to update -> Much longer time needed to update -> Not 1.8-compatible -> Less hackers

1.8 isn't going to break the game. A negative attitude towards it, however, will.
ur threads are so long
i just skip through all of it

Honestly 1.8 is a bit hard to pvp with. (I've been using it for the past month)
But thats because other players use 1.7. If everyone used 1.8 I don't see any problem

My take:
I think everyone is kinda exaggdurating the whole thing out, it may change pvp, but it wont totally "ruin" it. Yes it might change what players need to be good at (clicking) but thats what has happened in all the previous versions anyway. E.g. in 1.25-1.6 it was getting used to timing and pressing the "w" key, giving you a semi constant sprint during a fight. And if players wernt good at that they would lose majority of fights against players who are good at it. Because of this advantage players did not need to be as good as strafing as they needed to, because w tapping made up for it. 1.7 then dropped this and it was more based on the strafe/blockhitting technique you used, fairing out the playing feild, meaning players who were not good at w tapping but good at strafing were given a boost in pvp. Ultimately weakening those in the opposing situation. And now in 1.8 it is more about clicking speeds and (jitter clicking) giving pvp supremacy to jitterclickers and people with slow clicking speeds left behind.
Those eras had major diffrences, and those eras have given certain people newfound skills agains their opponents, but theirs one skill that outshines them all: the ability to adapt. All of the community that are above average in pvp skill will continue to roughly have that same skill no matter what version they play in. Why, its because those people are adapters, they change the way they play to suit the version. And evem though this is quite a game changer, those people will find a way to pvp. It might give certain people an advantage but for the majority of players, they will play the same way as before.

In summation/tl:dr : People will adapt pvp wise, certain people will be better, and this massive outcry happens at every major pvp update so this is just another phase. :)

People need to understand, 1.8 will not break the MCGamer servers. It will fix them. So what if there are minor PvP bugs? I guarantee if you report them to Microsoft/Mojang/whoever the heck owns MC now, they'll be fixed by 1.8.2. I guarantee it.

Well said, Mooclan

Unfortunately, there is no way to change the hit color as of now, so the only solution would be to make all armor like chain.

I can't play Minecraft on 1.8 without lag spikes. I will get 100 fps and drop to 10 every 10 seconds or so. I know many others with this issue.
I understand there are many new features, but it is shame to see many players such as me, be forced to quit playing, due to the update.

You are right, it won't break the server, but it will lose a small section of it's community.
Surprised an ex-Sr. Staff thinks this way. It's really absurd to quit a game just because of something so insignificant. I can back my words up because I also get these damn lag spikes, but I still wouldn't quit because of that.

Though, commenting on the actual lag spikes. I think it's because of VBO; ever since I started using it, yes, it raised my FPS, but it also started damn lag spikes.

On my actual opinion about this topic:

Updating to 1.8 will not make a difference as far as hacking goes. The best hacked clients are already compatible with 1.8; I've tried so many hacked clients (in Vanilla of course) for experimenting and the ones with the worst hacks are already updated.
Also, just by common sense, it is easy to realize that this will not stop hackers; whenever there is light, there are shadows. Additionally, Minecraft 1.8 was released on September of 2014 and it's already January of 2015. Obviously there are a lot of hacked clients already.

Updating to 1.8, I have no problem with it. But every aspect of it is dull.
New blocks? Personally they all look like crap. I dislike the look of the new doors and these new ocean blocks aren't really appealing.

Rabbits? Like you will ever see one on an MCSG game. There is barely any animals in maps, and some of them don't even have animals; so the odds of actually seeing a rabbit in-game won't actually happen. Perhaps rabbits could be a new pet in the hub, however it's not like I'll pay for credits to just buy something useless. Talking about credits, I should supposedly have credits since I'm a Platinum donor, but I never got any of those.

Barriers? Okay, that sounds cool. Perhaps it will reduce some lag. It's not like glass causes a lot of lag anyway; the Glass block is mostly transparent anyway.

If anything, I support the update because I understand the position MCGamer is in. It's not easy to run a massive community under a game you're not in control of. Moreover, the update will make the servers more stable and faster, and with less lag too.

I reiterate, I have no problem with updating to 1.8, but that still won't change the fact that it's possibly the worst update.

For people who play competitively and focus on PvP, this issue isn't "insignificant"; it is actually game breaking. It completely hinders PvP skill and changes the outcome of fights to " who has more skill" to "who doesn't get a lag spike."

For me on 1.8, I can no longer maintain over 60fps, even with all the settings suggested. I also experience the lag spikes, making it an abysmal PvP experience.

Already knew this. I suppose this isn't very game breaking to me. If I died, I died; if I won, good for me. All very insignificant wins that I'll forget over an hour or even over a week. Then again, this is what I deal with and my style of gaming, all these could be very different from someone Else's eyes.

As I said, it is game breaking for competitive pvpers ;)

I understand your point of view, but I guess my position is different. Although I am an Ex- Senior Staff Member, I have played and been involved with clans for far before I even considered becoming a staff member.

For me at least, and a few others, it is simply 'we can't play on 1.8 competitively'. Sure, I might be able to run through the odd game, without having a lag spike during a fight, but I can't take a risk like that in a clan war.

My computer can run 1.8 and I can play on it, yes, but I can't play how I want to play.
I know others share this view, maybe not as many as I suspected, and no matter what happens we will lose a sector of the community.

I shouldn't have phrased it as I did, but I enjoy this game for what I have done in the past. If I can't do that, which is what would happen with this update, then I will not enjoy the game, and generally end up growing away from the community. I'm not quitting as such, but I would grow apart from MCGamer in general with this update.

And is it worth losing that small sector for what? Some barriers? New blocks that would rarely be used? I'm not sure.

I have full agreement with you on this topic. I've actually tried out 1.8.1 on optifine, and I really like it, it just takes getting used to. And the "skin only turning red" (what I call it) when you get hit screws up my timing but I also got used to that.
