You can see it this way. If you get an unfair advantage over your enemy then it's NOT allowed.

Game improving mods are allowed. Smartmove, minimap, x-ray etc. Can't be used since you gain an unfair advantage over other players.

Had the same problem earlier today. But it worked out when I had to delete the .minecraft folder for some changes to minecraft. Try to force an update, maybe that will help.
