But in all seriousness, have you tried 1.7.2 yet? Some rendering improvements that were made improves performance on slower computers a lot - I've heard of people having about 20-30 more FPS on average.

in 1.7.3 they buffed the chunk loading so it wont be as laggy as it used to be. you will just have to live without zoom and with fog
