You could use something to mess with your vision, as if a player is in front of you but you attack air, same with mobs.

Also you can do other stuff to mess with your senses in game, like hide the hotbar and invetory or mess with the sound like make it sound as if a creeper is blowing up behind you or a player is getting damaged near by.

Maybe trap the tributes in a sector with invisible bedrock like the forcefield in the book when they're in the jabber jay sector?

Players could get stuck inside blocks and bring them down to 3 hearts or al least a few less hearts the. They had before

Also there could be a tornado that destroys the segment. This would cause players to kind of need parkour and speeding skills!
