Personally, I like this better. If he said he wanted a smaller case and wasn't set on Ivy Bridge for some reason, I would have picked that case/processor.
Also, yours is missing a power supply

Get a 7200RPM drive, it will be worth it.
And ya, I guess using an SSD is optional, so not a big deal not using one

Don't get ram slower than 1600MHz, and always buy ram in Pairs.
Since it's not an SSD your going to need as much speed out of that drive as you can get.
a 7200RPM drive will be worth the investment.
Also, the wifi card I suggested, will be plugged into the machine like a graphics card, so nothing sticking out, and you save a USB port.

Also, you don't need an AC Wifi card unless you have AC wifi at home, which most people don't
